Poll...Worst or funniest advice you have been given?

I was just thinking about all of the unsolicited advice that people give you when you are pregnant about being a new mom.

The worst advice I ever heard was from a woman who told me to put booze (ie. whiskey) on the paci to help with teething.  Who would do that?  Luckily she is an old woman who won't be around any babies anytime soon!

Oh and drinking beer while breastfeeding will help the baby sleep.

  • Someone told me while I was pregnant to drink lager to help with a uti. Umm, no.

And my step mother insisted I needed to give the baby a glycerine suppository after not pooping for a couple of days, even after I told her the child health nurse said not to worry about it.

  • I didn't get a lot of bad advice butttttt about a year before I had my girls I was holding my niece in Target (she was maybe 10 months old or something like that) and this old lady walked by me and said REALLY LOUD....you need to put socks on that baby.  HELLO is SUMMER in FLORIDA my 10 month old (niece) doesn't need socks everywhere all the time...she won't die of feet cold.  I was so pissed haha.

  • The worst / most annoying piece of advice I've gotten isn't parenting related, but I can NOT STAND when someone tells me to "sleep now because you'll never sleep again".  Ummm ok you sleep with this gigantic mountain of a belly and achy hands and numb feet.  I measured 40 wks at 33 wks so I'm full term or larger for at least a whole month - sleep is not an option!!!!  And yes I understand that I will be deprived when they get here, but at least I can lay down somewhat comfortably when they are out!

Oh and since I've stopped working, this is all I've heard - lovely right!

  • We took Ava to a close friend's family birthday party when she was just a few weeks old (I know the family well).  Ava had the hiccups, and my friend's grandma tried to get me to give her a spoonful of suger.  Umm, no!  She kept bringing it up until Ava's hiccups finally stopped on their own.

  • I just love how everyone assumes that what worked for their babies will work for mine.  For example, my MIL started putting cereal in DH's bottle when he was about 2 months old to get him to sleep through the night.  He's dead-set on doing this because his mom keeps saying we HAVE to do it to get them to sleep through the night.  I'm not so sure.  I'd like to raise my kids by doing what works for them.  Oh, and their family recommends putting whisky on a baby's gums for teething.  Isn't that what they make orajel for?????

I'm sure the IL advice will just keep coming once they're here....

  • Well I can't remember any funny advice..but my dad asked me a humorous question a couple of nights ago when we were having dinner at my parents house. He asked me "So why does the doctor tell you not to drink wine while you are pregnant?". I thought I was hearing things. But he just said "back when your mom was pregnant, everyone drank wine!". Which I knew and am always left wondering if that's the reason I'm not smart enough to be a doctor..ha..ha.
  • My MIL told me if Ben didn't fall off something by the time he was 1 then he would die.  I about flipped out.  She told me this when he was about 3 months old.   I was like "where did that come from?" and she said she heard it somewhere.  She also told me I could feed Ben gravy and biscuits at 3 months.

Now, you know why she doesn't get to keep Ben by herself.

  • Amy 720 that is crazy!  He would die??? Who would say that??
  • What annoys me the most is when Conor is crying for whatever reason and everyone under the sun has advice or a comment.  Hello!  I know my son and 9 times out of 10 I know why he's crying and can calm him down.

When Conor was around 1-2 months old my grandma was over and he was fussing.  I think he was tired (he fights sleep) or something.  She suggested that he might be thirsty and I needed to give him a drink of water.  She also can't believe that I don't sleep in the nursery with Conor because she doesn't think I'll hear him cry in the middle of the night.  She doesn't trust the monitor we have for whatever reason.Confused

  • A man who I know well, but we're not THAT close... told me while we were T-TTC'ing that we needed to have sex on our sides - specifically with me on my right side and Frank on his left side so my left NOSTRIL was open and Frank's right nostril was open.  Better oxygen to the correct parts of the body.

     WTF?

  • My grandma told me that drinking a beer a night will help your milk supply if you're breast feeding. She says it's something in the hops. I'm hoping it's true, but I'm not sure. I'll have to research or ask the Dr. about that one.

  • When I was little I got whiskey on my gums.  Specifically when I was getting my adult teeth.  I would tell my mom they hurt even when they didn't so I could get some Devil

No actual bad advice yet, but a lot of "what not to dos" that my MIL does with my nephew.  Like, he's not quite two and drinks juice exclusivly.  And is pretty much fed a diet of mcdonalds.
